Have chronic back pain???
Try getting your CORE into shape, and the muscles that support it!
Researchers have found that people with chronic low back pain (85% of US adults) have decreased activation of certain muscles (to avoid sounding like a complete nerd i will refrain from telling you which ones because they are uber scientific sounding). Thus when performing traditional abdominal exercises with out proper lumbo-pelvic-hip stabilization there is increased pressure on the disks and compressive forces on the lumbar spine.
In other words; you are doing your exercises wrong.
